Two roads diverged (S vs. N)
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference."
â Robert Frost, âThe Road Not Taken"
I used to think this poem was a profound lesson on courage and individualityâchoosing the path less traveled and changing your life. Turns out, it was actually meant to poke fun at the poetâs indecisive friend. đ
Funny how the same words can mean totally different things depending on how we interpret them. There's a striking contrast between facts and meaningâyet both are vital for humanity to survive and thrive. Without facts, we wouldn't have the precision to land someone on the moon. But without imagination, we wouldn't have even dreamed of going.
Humanity's first step on the moon.
Though we all derive both facts and meaning, most of us tend to favor one. Some lean toward facts: What are the details? Whereâs the data? Others lean toward meaning: Whatâs the pattern? What does this mean?
This is the core of the Sensor vs. Intuitive distinction. If you've studied typology and personality before, you're probably familiar with this dichotomy in MBTI and Socionics. But personally, I find that Personality Ninja's explanation makes the most sense, as they draw clear distinctions and comparisons.
In this post, Iâll dive deeper into Sensors and Intuitives so you can better recognize where you stand, play to your strengths, and more importantly, become aware of your blind spots so that you can grow.
Sensors vs Intuitive
Without further ado, let's dive in to the differences between a Sensor and an Intuitive.
1. Concrete Facts vs Abstract Concepts
- Sensors prioritize concrete facts: tangible data like numbers or details they can verify. For example, a Sensor might assess a situation using exact sales figures or a roomâs precise temperature.
- Intuitives focus on abstract concepts, like patterns or the bigger picture, pondering what the data implies. An Intuitive might look at those sales figures and ponder questions like âWhatâs the underlying trend?â or âWhat could this mean in the future?â
2. Realistic Thinking vs Imaginative Thinking
- Sensors think realistically, emphasizing practicality. A Sensor might plan a project with clear, actionable steps based on available resources.
- Intuitives think imaginatively, connecting ideas to create new visions, often prioritizing creativity over feasibility. An Intuitive might brainstorm innovative approaches or long-term vision for the same project.
3. Physical Properties vs Symbolic Meaning
- Sensors notice physical propertiesâcolor, texture, quantity, or tasteâdescribing things literally. A Sensor might note the bright red shade and smooth surface of an apple.
- Intuitives seek symbolic meaning, interpreting what things represent or suggest. An Intuitive might see that apple as a symbol of health or a metaphor for temptation.
4. Action-Oriented vs Idea-Oriented
- Sensors are action-oriented, diving in to get something going. A Sensor might start by working on the details of the project, then eventually build up to the bigger picture.
- Intuitives are idea-oriented, preferring to explore possibilities and envision the future. An Intuitive could contemplate much on what could be, but may hesitate when it comes to the nitty-gritty of execution.
5. Uses Examples vs Uses Analogies
- Sensors use real-life examples, like personal experiences, to explain things. They might share how they fixed a car last summer to elaborate on their topic at hand.
- Intuitives use analogies, linking concepts through metaphors. They might compare an idea to a river carving a path through rock to highlight the point.
So, which are youâa Sensor or an Intuitive?
Both ways of thinking have their strengths and blind spots. So instead of wishing you were wired differently, embrace who you are. Growth starts with honesty: take a clear, unfiltered look at yourself and see where you lean. Only then can you work on your gaps and a create lasting change.
Also, this is just the tip of the iceberg. If you dive deeper, you'll find that Sensors can be either Sensor Explorers or Sensor Buildersâand the same goes for Intuitives. This idea stems from the Hunter vs. Farmer Theory.
But thatâs a big topic that deserves a post of its own, so Iâll save it for another day. Stay tuned!
